Who it's for
For anyone whose money is not out of control but is out of sight — income arrives, bills leave, and the balance at the end of the month is a surprise every time. Paper works here for a reason that has nothing to do with nostalgia: writing an expense down takes a few seconds of attention, and that attention is the entire mechanism. Budgeting apps categorise spending after the fact, which is useful for accounting and useless for changing behaviour. This planner is for the month you are living in, not the one you already spent.
How to use it
- Write your expected income at the top before the month starts, not after the first payday.
- List fixed costs first — rent, loans, insurance, subscriptions. These are decisions you already made; they just need recording.
- Give the remainder a job: groceries, transport, savings, spending money. A category with no number is not a plan.
- Log expenses daily for the first two weeks. It takes under a minute and it is where the surprises show up.
- On the last day, compare planned against actual, and carry the difference into next month's numbers rather than resolving to do better.
Questions
How is this different from a budgeting app?
An app records what already happened and sorts it. A paper planner makes you decide in advance and notice as you go. If your problem is not knowing where money went, an app is fine. If your problem is spending without registering it, writing by hand is the point.
What if my income changes every month?
Budget the income you are sure of and treat the rest as it arrives — the planner has room for both. Irregular earners usually plan against their lowest recent month and assign any surplus at the end, which also builds a buffer without a separate system.
Does it work for a couple sharing finances?
Yes, and the usual approach is one shared sheet for joint costs plus a personal sheet each. Print two copies of the expense tracker and one of the overview — that division tends to cause fewer arguments than a single merged page.
