Who it's for
For the parent tired of negotiating the same three tasks every evening. A chart works not because children love charts but because it moves the argument off the person: the sheet says what is due, so the reminder stops being a personal criticism. The reward tracker matters for the same reason — an explicit deal, agreed in advance, ends the nightly renegotiation. How to use it
- Pick the chores together and write them in the child's own words. Ownership starts at the naming.
- Use the age list to keep tasks achievable — a four-year-old can carry cutlery to the table; sorting laundry comes years later.
- Agree the reward and the number of ticks that earns it before the first day, and write both on the sheet.
- Hang it at the child's eye level, not yours. A chart above the counter is invisible to the person using it.
- Tick together at a fixed time each evening. The ritual is what keeps it alive past week two.
Questions
What age is this suitable for?
Roughly three to twelve. Younger children need pictures and one or two chores; the included age list suggests what is realistic at each stage. Teenagers generally do better with a written agreement than a tick chart.
Should chores be paid?
That is a family decision and the chart works either way — the reward column takes pocket money, screen time, points toward an outing, or nothing at all. What matters is that whatever you choose is stated in advance rather than improvised.
It worked for two weeks and then stopped. Why?
Almost always because the ticking ritual lapsed or the reward was too far away. Shorten the reward horizon to a week, cut the chore list in half, and tick at a fixed moment with the child present.
